Marco Ceccarelli è professore ordinario di Meccanica applicata alle macchine presso l’Università di Roma Tor Vergata. Nato nel 1958, si è laureato con lode nel 1982 presso l’Università ‘La Sapienza di Roma dove ha anche conseguito il titolo di Dottore di Ricerca in Meccanica Applicata nel 1987. Nel 1987 è stato visiting scholar presso la Stanford University, USA e nel 1990 ha ottenuto una borsa di studio CNR-NATO come visiting professor presso il Politecnico di Valencia, Spagna. Dal 1990 insegna corsi di Meccanica dei robot e Meccanica applicata alle macchine, anche in lingua inglese. Dal 1996 al 2018 è stato responsabile scientifico del LARM: Laboratorio di Robotica e Meccatronica presso l’Università di Cassino e dal 2019 è direttore del LARM2 Laboratory of Robot Mechatronics del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale dell’Università di Roma Tor Vergata. E’ fellow ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers), e socio di GMA (Gruppo Italiano di Meccanica applicata alle machine), AEIM (Spanish Society of Mechanical Engineers), IFToMM Italy (Italian Association of MMS), IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), FeIbIM (Iberoamerican Federation for Mechanical Engineering) e IFAC (int. Federation of Automatic Control). Dal 1998 al 2004 è stato presidente della Commissione IFToMM per la Storia della Scienza delle Macchine e dei Meccanismi ed attualmente ne è ancora membro. Dal 1999 è membro della Commissione tecnica IFToMM per la Robotica e Meccatronica. Fino al 2008 è stato anche membro della Commissione tecnica IFToMM per la Cinematica Computazionale. Dal 2005 al 2015 è stato presidente della Commissione FeiBIM per la Meccatronica. Dal 2002 è Presidente fondatore della Commissione scientifica per il MUSME, IFToMM-FeIbIM International Conference on Mechatronics and Multibody Systems e dal 2009 del MEDER, IFToMM International Conference on Mechanism Design for Robots. È membro di commissioni scientifiche per numerosi congressi internazionale, come RAAD, ROMANSY, SYROM, ISRM, AMMS. È stato associate editor per la rivista Mechanism and Machine Theory nel 2005-06. È associate editor per le riviste Advanced Robotic Systems (editor-in-chief per Service Robotics), MDPI Machines, MDPI Robotics, Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering, Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering, e molte altre. Ha svolto e svolge attività di revisore per numerose riviste scientifiche internazionali e per congressi internazionali. È revisore di progetti di ricerca in programmi nazionali ed internazionali. È valutatore AVA dell’ANVUR ed è stato membro CEV per l’esercizio VQR 2015-2016. È stato invitato presso istituzione in molti paesi ed ha tenuto lezioni, corsi e conferenze ad invito in numerosi paesi, anche come visiting professor per brevi e lunghi periodi, come per esempio alla Waseda University di Tokyo, all’università di Lima, alla McGill University di Montreal, al Beijing Institute of Technologies di Pechino, e all’Instituto Nacional de Ingeniera di Città del Messico. Ha svolto attività di consulenza scientifica presso aziende su problematiche relative all’automazione e la robotica. Ha svolto attività di Organizzatore di congressi svolti presso l’Università di Cassino: HMM2000 e HMM2004, International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms; RAAD1997 e RAAD2004, International Workshop on Robotics in Alpe-Adria Danube Region; CK2005, IFToMM International Workshop on Computational Kinematics. Co-fondatore di EUCOMES, the European Conference on Mechanism Science, ha organizzato a Cassino il secondo evento nel 2008. Ha svolto attività di Co-Organizzatore dei congressi MUSME in 2002 in Mexico City, in 2005 in Uberlandia, Brazil, nel 2008 in San Juan, Argentina, nel 2011 a Valencia, Spagna e nel 2014 a Huatulco in Messico. Ha svolto attività di Editor scientifico per i predetti Congressi ed in particolare gli atti di HMM2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 e 2018 sono stati pubblicati dalla Kluwer/Springer. È editor scientifico della collana History on Mechanism and Machine Science e della collana Mechanism and Machine Science, pubblicate dalla Springer. Ha scritto il libro ‘Fundamentals of Mechanics of Robotic Manipulation’ pubblicato da Kluwer/Springer nel 2004. Nel 2008 ha curato come editor ‘Robot Manipulators’ pubblicato da I-Tech Education Publishing KG in Vienna e nel 2012 ‘Service Robots and Robotics’ pubblicato da IGI-Global. Con il prof Carlos Lopez-Cajùn ha scritto il libro ‘Mecanismos –Fundamentos cinematicos para el diseno y optimizacion de maquinaria’ pubblicato da Trillas Publisher in Mexico nel 2008 con terza edizione nel 2015. Nel novembre 2003 ha ricevuto la Laurea Honoris Causa in Meccatronica dalla UNI, Universidad Nacional di Lima, Perù; nel maggio 2009 dal Politecnico di Kursk, Russia, ha ricevuto la Laurea Honoris Causa in Ingegneria; in ottobre 2009 ha ricevuto il titolo di dottore di ricerca Honoris Causa in ingegneria meccanica dal Politecnico di Brasov, Romania; in aprile 2010 ha ricevuto il titolo di dottore di ricerca Honoris Causa in ingegneria meccanica dall’Università di Craiova, Romania, come riconoscimento della sua carriera accademica e scientifica. Ha ricevuto il premio 2010 Engineer-Historian Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) alla carriera con particolare riferimento alle sue attività in tema di storia dell’ingegneria meccanica. Dal 2001 al 2006 è stato Coordinatore della Commissione Ricerca del GMA, Gruppo Italiano di Meccanica applicata alle macchine. Dal 2004 al 2007 è stato Segretario Generale della IFToMM the International Federation for the Promotion of Machine and Mechanism Science. È stato eletto Presidente della IFToMM the International Federation for the Promotion of Machine and Mechanism Science per il periodo 2008-2011 ed ancora per 2016-2019. Svolge attività di scambio internazionale di studenti e docenti in programmi europei (non solo Erasmus) e extraeuropei con numerose università. È stato relatore di più di 100 tesi di laurea triennale e magistrale e più di 25 tesi di dottorato, anche di studenti stranieri, in alcuni casi con accordi per doppio titolo. I suoi interessi scientifici sono rivolti agli aspetti della Teoria e Progettazione dei Meccanismi e della Meccanica dei robot. Particolari argomenti di suo interesse sono: analisi e progettazione dello spazio di lavoro e della manipolazione; progettazione di robot e strutture robotiche; progettazione di manipolatori ed organi di presa; meccanica della presa; storia della meccanica, progettazione di meccanismi per sistemi di servizio e di automazioni. Ha pubblicato come autore o co-autore più di ottocento articoli in atti di congressi o in riviste scientifiche a diffusione nazionale ed internazionale. È stato editore o co-editor di venticinque libri ed autore o coautore di quattro altri libri monografici. L’impatto delle sue pubblicazioni è valutato da H= 26 in Scopus con più di 3000 citazioni. Marco Ceccarelli was born in Rome in 1958. He received the mechanical engineer degree cum laude in 1982 at the University “La Sapienza” of Rome. At the same University he received a Ph.D. degree in Applied Mechanics in 1987. In 1987 he was visiting scholar at Stanford University, U.S.A., and in 1990 he received a CNR-NATO annual grant as visiting professor at the Technical University of Valencia, Spain. Since 1990 he teaches courses on Mechanics of Machinery and Mechanisms, and Mechanics of Robots at Cassino University, and from September 2018 in University of Rome Tor Vergata. Since 1996 up to 2018 he was Director of LARM, the Laboratory of Robot Mechatronics at the University of Cassino and South Latium and since 2019 he is Director of LARM2, the Laboratory of Robotics and Mechatronics in University of Rome Tor Vergata Since 2001 he is Full Professor of Mechanics of Machinery and Mechanisms at Cassino University. From 2003 to 2005 he has been Vice Director of DiMSAT Department. Since March 2019 he is full Professor in University of Rome Tor Vergata. He is ASME fellow (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and member of AEIM (Spanish Society of Mechanical Engineers), IFToMM Italy (Italian Association of MMS), IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), IFAC (International Federation of Automation and Control), FeIbIM (Iberoamerican Federation for Mechanical Engineering), AISI (Italian Society for the History of Engineering), GMA (Italian Group for Mechanics of Machinery). From 1998 to 2004 he has been Chairman of the Permanent Commission for History of Machine and Mechanism Science of IFToMM, the International Federation for the Promotion of Machine and Mechanism Science, and currently he is still a member. Since 1999 he is also member of the IFToMM Technical Committee for Robotics. He has been member of IFToMM TC for Computational Kinematics. He is Chairman of the Commission for Mechatronics of FeIbIM, Federaciòn Iberoamericana de Ingenieria Mecànica. In 2008-09 and 2014-16 he has been Coordinator of the Scientific Committee for RAAD, International Workshops on Robotics in Alpe-Adria-Danube Region. Since 2002 he is Chairman of the Scientific Committee of MUSME, IFToMM-FeIbIM International Conference on Mechatronics and Multibody Systems. Since 2010 is founder Chairman of the Scientific Committee of MEDER, IFToMM International Conference on Mechanism Design for Robots. He has been the founder and then Scientific Editor for the Proceedings of HMM 2000, HMM 2004, HMM 2008, HMM 2012 and HMM2016, International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms. He has been Chairman for HMM 2000 and 2004 that have been held in Cassino. He has been the founder of MUSME, the IFToMM-FeIbIM Symposium on Multibody Systems and Mechatronics. He has been Co-Chairman for MUSME in 2002 in Mexico City, in 2005 in Uberlandia, Brazil, in 2008 in San Juan, Argentina, in 2011 in Valencia, Spain and in 2014 in Huatulco, Mexico. He has been Chairman for RAAD Workshops held in Cassino in 1997 and 2003. He has been Chairman for CK2005, IFToMM International Workshop on Computational Kinematics that has been held in Cassino in 2005. He has been co-founder of EUCOMES, the European conference on Mechanism Science and he has been Chairman for the second event held in Cassino in 2008. He is the Scientific Editor of a Book Series on History of Mechanism and Machine Science published by Springer since 2007. In 2007 he has edited ‘Distinguished Figures in MMS – Part 1’ published by Springer in the above-mentioned book series and he has also edited the Part 2 and 3. He is Scientific Editor of a Book Series on Mechanism and Machine Science published by Springer since 2010. He has co-authored the book ‘A short Illustrated History of Machines’ published at Technical University in Madrid in 2008 with a revised version published by Springer in 2010. In 2008 he edited the book ‘Robot Manipulators’ published by I-Tech Education Publishing KG in Wien. In 2012 he edited the book ‘Service Robots and Robotics’ published by IGI-Global. He has written the book ‘Fundamentals of Mechanics of Robotic Manipulation’ published by Kluwer/Springer in 2004. Together with prof Carlos Lopez-Cajùn he has written the book ‘Mecanismos –Fundamentos cinematicos para el diseno y optimizacion de maquinaria’ published by Trillas Publisher in Mexico in 2008 with second edition in 2014. He also edited or co-edited books as proceedings of several other conferences. With LARM team he has conceived and developed several algorithms and systems, like ring formula for workspace determination, design formulation for circular-arc cams, CAPAMAN manipulator, LARM Hand, CATRASYS, CALOWI, LARM Rickshaw robot, LARM Hexapod, LARM clutched arm, Cassino Hexapod, Surveybot, leg exoskeletons, LARMbot humanoid, Heritagebot Platform, even with experimental characterization and results. He has also worked out findings and interpretations in the History of Mechanical Engineering, like on Screw Theory by Giulio Mozzi and on personalities like Lorenzo Allievi and Giuseppe Antonio Borgnis. In November 2003 he has received the Degree of Doctor Honoris Causa in Mechatronic Engineering from UNI, National University of Lima, Perù; in May 2009 he received Honoris Causa Degree in Engineering from Technical University of Kursk, Russia; in October 2009 he received Honoris Causa Doctor Degree in Engineering from Technical University of Brasov, Romania; in April 2010 he received Honoris Causa Doctor Degree in Engineering from University of Craiova, Romania, as recognizing his academic and scientific career, and his support to the activity. He has also received the 2010 Engineer-Historian Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for his lifelong involvement in mechanical engineering, specifically the history of machines and mechanisms. He is 2017-2020 member of ASME committee National Inventors Hall of Fame. He has been Coordinator of the Commission for Research of GMA, Italian National Group for Mechanics of Machinery for the period 2002-2006. He has been elected Secretary-General of IFToMM for the term 2004-2007. He has been elected President of IFToMM for the term 2008-2011 and again in 2016-2019 since his IFToMM leadership with different positions since 1998. His research interests cover aspects of Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (TMM) and Mechanics of Robots. Specific subjects of his interest are Analysis and Design of Workspace and Manipulation; Mechanical Design of Manipulators, Legged Robots; Grippers and Hands; Mechanics of Grasp; History of TMM; and Mechanism Design.
