Giovanni Schiavon si e` laureato con lode in Ingegneria elettronica presso l'Universita` di Roma "La Sapienza" nel 1982. Dal 2012 e` professore straordinario all'Università di Roma "Tor Vergata", dove e` stato professore associato dal 2000 e ricercatore dal 1984 e dove insegna "Campi elettromagnetici" dal 2000 e ha insegnato "Telerilevamento e diagnostica elettromagnetica" dal 1996 al 2011. La sua attivita` di ricerca si e` sviluppata principalmente nel campo del telerilevamento a microonde, dell'atmosfera e della superficie terrestre, della propagazione atmosferica e dell'analisi di strutture guidanti per onde millimetriche. E` revisore per le riviste scientifiche Radio Science, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing (TGRS), IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters (GRSL), Natural Hazards e per diversi volumi della casa editrice VSP. E` stato chairman di sessioni di congressi nazionali e internazionali. E` stato responsabile di ``work packages'' in diversi contratti con l'Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA). E` stato responsabile di contratti con l’Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI). Ha partecipato ai progetti internazionali di telerilevamento attivo della superficie terrestre AGRISAR ('86), AGRISCATT ('87, '88), MAESTRO-1 ('89), MAC Europe ('91), SIR-C/XSAR ('94) e al programma ERA-ORA (IV Programma Quadro della Comunita` Europea) nel campo delle tecniche spaziali applicate al monitoraggio ambientale. Ha pubblicato piu` di 200 lavori scientifici, la maggior parte dei quali su riviste o atti di congressi internazionali (con referee).

Giovanni Schiavon received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) in electronic engineering from the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” Rome, Italy, in 1982. He is currently a Full Professor with the University of Rome “Tor Vergata,” Rome, Italy, where he has been a Researcher since 1984 and an Associate Professor since 2000. He has been teaching courses on remote sensing since 1996 and on electromagnetic fields since 2000. He has managed several contracts with the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. He has been involved in several international remote sensing projects since 1986. He has authored or coauthored more than 200 scientific papers, the most of which on international journals or proceedings. His research activity has been mainly concerned with remote sensing of the atmosphere and of the earth surface, propagation, and millimeter waves. Prof. Schiavon is a member of the Centro di Telerilevamento a Microonde and the Società Italiana di Elettromagnetismo (SIEm). He has served as a reviewer for the international journals, namely, the Radio Science, the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING, the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, the Natural Hazards, and for several volumes of the VSP publisher.

New paradigms capable of performing effective analysis and synthesis stemming from such a type of information are then required in order to exploit better and disseminate the information contained in the data. In this letter, a data fusion technique between CSK and Sentinel-1 data is described. To this purpose, an ad hoc Nonlinear Principal Component Analysis (NLPCA) with Auto-Associative Neural Networks (AANNs) algorithm is designed and developed. The network extracts the most relevant features from the combination of the different scattering mechanisms. The extracted features are then used as inputs for a land cover classification exercise.
