Salvatore Tucci, laureato in Fisica presso l'Università degli studi di Pisa, è dal 1986 Professore Ordinario di 'Sistemi di Elaborazione dell'Informazione' (ING/INF05), presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Università degli studi di Roma Tor Vergata.
In posizione di “fuori ruolo”, è stato Capo dell’Ufficio del’Informatica e dei servizi di Telecomunicazione della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri dal marzo 1999 ad ottobre 2008. In tale posizione si è occupato della progettazione, della direzione e della gestione dei sistemi di informatica e telecomunicazione della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri. Egli ha altresì rappresentato l’Italia al G8 e presso la Unione Europea in occasione di alcuni incontri internazionali sul Crimine informatico e sui temi della protezione delle Infrastrutture Critiche.
Dal 1982 al 1986 è stato Ricercatore Confermato presso il Dipartimento di Informatica dell'Università di Pisa.
E' stato nel 1981-82 Visiting scientist presso l'IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, USA, Visiting researcher nel 1977 presso l'IRIA Francia nell'ambito del progetto SIRIUS.
E’ stato dal 1974 al 1982 Contrattista Universitario presso l’Istituto di Scienze dell’Informazione dell’Università degli studi di Pisa, e borsista CNR presso l’IEI del CNR a Pisa dal 1972 al 1974.
E’ stato il Coordinatore del Dottorato di Ricerca in Informatica ed Ingegneria dell’automazione presso l’Università di Roma Tor Vergata nell’a.a 2011/12.
E’ membro del Consiglio Scientifico del Master di II livello in Homeland Security presso l’Università “Campus Biomedico” di Roma.
E’ tra i fondatori del CAST (Centro interdipartimentale per il calcolo avanzato nella scienza) dell’Università di Roma TorVergata e fa parte del relativo collegio.
E' stato membro del Consiglio Scientifico del Centro di Eccellenza sulle Reti Fotoniche della Scuola Superiore di Perfezionamento S. Anna di Pisa dal 2003 al 2007.
E' stato membro del consiglio scientifico dell'Istituto per l'Informatica e la Telematica del CNR di Pisa dal 2005 al 2007.
Dal settembre 1997 al settembre 2001 e' stato vicepresidente del Gruppo Nazionale degli Informatici delle Facoltà di Ingegneria ( GII) e Presidente della relativa Commissione Ricerca
Dall'anno accademico 1991/92 all'anno accademico 1996/97 è stato il primo Presidente del Consiglio di Corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Informatica presso l'Università di Roma Tor Vergata.
Attività di ricerca.
Specialista nel campo della Modellistica, Valutazione delle Prestazioni ed Affidabilità dei Sistemi di Elaborazione, della Simulazione, dei Sistemi Operativi, del Calcolo Parallelo, dei Sistemi Distribuiti e dei Supercomputers, da 35 anni svolge attività di ricerca nell'ambito delle architetture e della gestione dei sistemi di elaborazione e di comunicazione, con particolare riguardo allo sviluppo di metodi e strumenti per l'analisi delle prestazioni e dell'affidabilità dei sistemi informatici. Ha studiato metodologie di introduzione dell’innovazione tecnologica nei processi della Pubblica Amministrazione in parallelo ad una sperimentazione diretta ed alla realizzazione di un tool valutativo.
Gli interessi più recenti riguardano lo studio e l’impiego di tecniche analitico/simulative per l'analisi delle infrastrutture critiche informatizzate;.
E' stato responsabile di numerosi progetti di ricerca per il MPI, il MURST e il CNR. Ha condotto numerose attività di ricerca applicata in collaborazione con aziende ed industrie del settore. Partecipa ai progetti di ricerca del CNR, del MIUR e della Comunità Europea attraverso l'Università di Roma Tor Vergata. Ha coordinato l'unità di ricerca presso la Presidenza del Consiglio del progetto PERF finanziato nel ambito dei FIRB del MIUR. Ha collaborato a vari progetti europei attraverso collaborazioni cin ENEA e CASPUR.
E' autore di circa 100 pubblicazioni scientifiche.
Attività Didattica.
E' titolare della cattedra di Calcolatori Elettronici e, oltre al Corso di titolarità, impartisce gli insegnamenti di “Metriche e Modelli di Internet” e di “Governo Digitale” presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Università di Roma Tor Vergata e di Informatica IV presso l'Accademia della Guardia di Finanza per il corso di laurea in Sicurezza dei sistemi economici e finanziari.
Ha tenuto corsi di Sistemi Operativi, Reti Logiche, Simulazione ad eventi discreti, Sistemi di elaborazione ad alte prestazioni, Sistemi distribuiti, Architetture avanzate dei Calcolatori, Ingegneria del Web e di Informatica applicata alle scienze umanistiche presso l'Università di Roma Tor Vergata, l'Università di Pisa, l'Università di Viterbo e l'Università di Parigi XIII (Villetaneuse).
Attività di servizio per la comunità scientifica
E' stato responsabile dell'organizzazione, del comitato scientifico di Scuole estive, convegni e congressi internazionali. E' stato il General Chair di Performance '93 (Roma 27 settembre - 1 Ottobre 1993) e Performance 2002 (Roma 23 - 27 settembre 2002), due edizioni della conferenza internazionale dell'IFIP WG 7.3. E’ stato Honorary chair del convegno CRITIS ’08. Ha partecipato in qualità di componente del comitato di programma di molti convegni e workshop nel settore della valutazione delle prestazioni ed affidabilità dei sistemi informatici e di telecomunicazione.
Ha svolto e svolge attività di revisione per riviste scientifiche internazionali e nazionali nonché per convegni e congressi nel settore delle prestazioni ed affidabilità dei sistemi di elaborazione e della protezione delle infrastrutture critiche informatizzate.
Ha svolto attività di valutazione di progetti nel settore dell’ICT per conto di Enti pubblici (Regioni e Ministeri)
E’ stato nominato esperto dal Ministro dell’Università nell’anno 2001 per la redazione del piano nazionale delle ricerche e per la predisposizione delle proposte di investimento dei fondi FIRB nel settore dell’Informatica.
E' stato Consigliere per la costruzione della Società dell'Informazione della Giunta Regionale del Molise nell’anno 2000.
Ha rappresentato la Regione Molise nel Consiglio di Amministrazione della società Molise Dati, società Regionale di insourcing per l’informatica, dal 2000 al 2002.
Ha diretto per circa 8 anni ( 1990-1998) il Centro di Calcolo e Documentazione dell'Università di Roma Tor Vergata. Ha progettato i sistemi informatici e delle reti dati dell'Università di Roma Tor Vergata. Ha coordinato la progettazione dell'infrastruttura informatica del Policlinico Tor Vergata.
E’ stato socio fondatore nel 1987 dell’ISCS ( Società italiana per la simulazione) una associazione culturale senza scopi di lucro.
E’ stato socio fondatore dell’AIIC, l’associazione italiana degli esperti di Infrastrutture critiche, associazione culturale senza scopo di lucro, ed è stato il primo Presidente, dal 2006 al 2010.
Fa parte del Consiglio Scientifico della Fondazione ICSA. La fondazione si occupa di Intelligence e Sicurezza. Fa parte del consiglio tecnico scientifico del CASPUR, consorzio inter-universitario per il supercalcolo.
Onorificenze e Premi
Nel 1992 gli è stato conferito il premio “Cultura “ dal Rotary di Campobasso.
Nel 2000 è stato insignito dell'onorificenza di Grande Ufficiale al merito della Repubblica Italiana.
Nel 2006 gli è stato conferito il premio quale migliore informatico dell’anno dall’Associazione Professionale degli Informatici.

Positions.
Salvatore Tucci received the laurea degree in Physics from the University of Pisa in 1972. Since 1986 he is Full Professor in Computer Engineering at the University of Roma “Tor Vergata”, on July 23rd, 2012 he has been elected Director of the “Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e Ingegneria Informatica” and in addiction, on October 5th, 2012, he has been elected member of the Academic Senate.
However, from 1999 to 2008 he has been “on leave of absence” as Head of the Italian Prime Minister Office for Informatics and Telecommunications. In such a position he served as designer, director and manager of the complex telematic systems as well as advisor for political aspects in ICT sector. He represented Italy in some governmental International meetings (G8 and EU) on Cyber Crime and on Critical Informatized Infrastructure Protection.
From 1974 to 1986 he served as Researcher within the Department of Computer Science, University of Pisa. From 1972 to 1974 he held a fellowship at IEI, an Institute of the Italian National Council of Research(CNR), in Pisa. From 1981 to 1982, Prof Tucci was Visiting Scientist at IBM TJ Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, USA where he designed and implemented innovative algorithms for product form queueing networks solution. In 1977 he was Visiting Researcher at LABORIA IRIA – France collaborating to the SIRIUS project, headed by Erol Gelenbe, developing analytical and simulative models of checkpoint management to be adopted for systems operating in the presence of random failures.
Component of the PhD steering committee in Informatica e Ingegneria dell’Automazione at University of Roma "Tor Vergata". Component of Scientific committee of the post graduate Master in Homeland Security at Università “Campus Biomedico” in Rome. Member and co-founder of CAST the interdepartmental research center for HPC at University of TorVergata. He has been from 2003 to 2007 component of the Scientific committee of the “Centro di Eccellenza sulle Reti Fotoniche” of “Scuola Superiore di Perfezionamento S. Anna”, Pisa. He has been from 2005 to 2007 component of the Scientific committee of the IIT of CNR in Pisa. From 1997 to 2001 he has been vice-president of the Italian Group of professors and researcher in Computer Engineering. From 1991 to 1997 he was the Dean of Computer Engineering Curriculum at the Faculty of Engineering at University of Roma, Tor Vergata.
Research activities
His research interests include performance evaluation of computer/communication systems, Parallel and distributed systems, Operating Systems, Internet modeling, Conception and design of large information systems for decision-making and government, Critical information infrastructures modeling. He has been responsible of several research projects funded by Ministry of the University, Ministry of the Education and National Research Council. He now is participating to projects funded by European Commission and by Ministry of the University. He was the responsible of the research unit at Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri In the frame of the Project PERF, a PRIN – MIUR Project. Professor Tucci Authored about one hundred referred papers. He has served as General chair and President of the organizing and program committee of various national and international conferences.
Teaching activities.
Prof Tucci is teaching at present Computer Architectures, Metrics and Models of Internet , E-Government and an Introductory course in computer science. He taught courses on Computer Engineering, Operating systems, Simulation, Performance evaluation and Modelling of computer/communication systems, Digital switching, Distributed systems, Complex networks, Web Engineering, Computer and humanities, in several Universities: Roma Tor Vergata, Pisa, Viterbo and Paris XIII ( Villetaneuse).
Scientific community Services.
He has been responsible for the organization of the summer schools scientific committee, of international workshops and conferences. He was General Chair of two editions of the IFIP WG 7.3 International Conference: Performance '93 (Roma, september 27 - october 1 1993) and Performance 2002 (Roma, september 23-27 2002). He was Honorary Chair of CRITIS 2008 workshop. He participated as committee component in many conferences and workshops in the fields of performance and reliability evaluation in computer and telecommunication systems. He worked as reviewer for national and international scientific journals and for conferences and workshops in the fields of performance and reliability of computer systems and of protection of critical information infrastructure. In 2000 he has been counselor for the construction of the Information Society of the Molise regional council. In 2001 the Italian Ministry of University designed him as expert for the drafting of the national research plan and for the disposal of investment proposals of FIRB founds in the sector of computer science. He directed for about eight years (1990-1998) the Computing and Documentation Center of the University of Roma "Tor Vergata". He designed the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" information system and data network. He coordinated the design of the information infrastructure of Policlinico Tor Vergata. In 1987 he was founder member of ISCS (Società Italiana per la Simulazione), a no profit association. He was a founder member in 2006 and the first President, until 2010, of AIIC (Associazione Italiana esperti in Infrastrutture Critiche), a NGO organization in Critical infrastruction, information protection. He is part of the Scientific Council of ICSA Foundation, a foundation that works in the fields of Intelligence and Security. He is part of CASPUR the technical scientific council, an inter-university council for supercomputing.
