Autrice di articoli scientifici basati su ricerche pionieristiche nel campo delle neuroscienze, che hanno dato origine alla formulazione di concetti applicativi quali la plasticità cerebrale e i neuroni a specchio, dal 1980 ha svolto la sua attività scientifica, didattica e assistenziale, strutturata presso l’ospedale S.Eugenio  e il Policlinico di Tor Vergata dove è stata responsabile, nell’ambito della Cattedra di Neurologia, del servizio di Elettromiografia e Potenziali Evocati dal 1986, e diretto per 5 anni un centro sperimentale per la cura e la diagnosi della sclerosi multipla. Per le sue ricerche innovative riguardanti il sistema motorio e le capacità plastiche del cervello è stata invitata a collaborare all’estero per l’ideazione di progetti scientifici per lo sviluppo delle neuroscienze, presso le università di Londra, Bruxelles, Lione, Washington e Irvine (California), con un contributo personale relativo alla scoperta del concetto di eccitabilità motoria cerebrale nell’uomo ( articolo pubblicato su rivista internazionale che ad oggi conta 1290 citazioni al citation index) e dell’inibizione intracorticale associata alla stimolazione magnetica transcranica, eseguita con la tecnica del doppio stimolo da lei ideata. Pubblicato nel 1992, l’articolo che ne è derivato è tra i più citati in neurofisiologia clinica con un record di 1340 citazioni. Nel 2009 propone il primo laboratorio di educazione alla pace.

 

Attualmente, collabora con i colleghi del Dipartimento di Sanità Pubblica (Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia) e del Dipartimento di Musicologia (Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia) all’elaborazione e realizzazione di nuove linee di ricerca multidisciplinari, riguardanti aspetti inediti della plasticità cerebrale, del ruolo della musica nel recupero clinico e della qualità di vita nei pazienti colpiti da ictus cerebrale e nei “care givers”. Il progetto mette insieme studiosi di varie discipline inter-facoltà al fine di integrare ricerca di base e sviluppo sociale, con l’obiettivo di contribuire alla costruzione di un ponte tra scienza, cultura, educazione sanitaria e benessere individuale.

Linee di Ricerca e attività di laboratorio:

 

                     Contributi personali relativi al progresso scientifico nei suddetti campi: la scoperta del concetto di eccitabilità motoria corticale nel cervello umano e le relative modificazioni fisiologiche e patologiche. La scoperta dell’inibizione intracorticale, associata alla stimolazione magnetica transcranica, eseguita con la tecnica del doppio stimolo, con le relative applicazioni in campo clinico e farmacologico.

                     Principi di plasticità cerebrale e recupero clinico.

Formazione post laurea di perfezionamento all'estero:

 

1985-1986: Vincitrice di una borsa di studio del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione per un periodo di 1 anno di perfezionamento in tecniche avanzate di neurografia ed elettromiografia presso il Dipartimento di Neurofisiologia Clinica del Rigs Royal Hospital (Università di Copenaghen).

1987 : Vincitrice di una borsa di Studio del CNR per svolgere ricerche sul controllo motorio e il reclutamento muscolare monitorato con tecniche di registrazione di single fibre,  per un periodo di tre mesi, presso il dipartimento di Neurofisiologia Clinica, Istituto Granit, Upsala (Svezia).

2005-2007: Periodo sabbatico trascorso negli Stati Uniti, come visiting scientist, presso i dipartimenti di neurofisiologia dell'Università di George Town (Washington DC) diretti dalla candidata Nobel Prof. Candace Pert, NIH (Washington DC) e Irvine (University Campus of California). Nel corso di questo periodo concessole dalla Facoltà di Medicina, per approfondire nuovi aspetti riguardanti la plasticità cerebrale, si dedica all’osservazione delle basi neurofisiologiche del processo creativo e in particolare della composizione musicale. Nel tenere nota dei risultati di questa ricerca, inizia a sperimentare un nuovo approccio d’indagine, cercando di trasferire i propri impulsi concettuali ed emotivi direttamente sulla tastiera del pianoforte, secondo una modalità spontanea, ma di senso, con l’idea di tracciare i confini di uno spazio sonoro interno dell’ armonia, utilizzando sé stessa come soggetto sperimentale. Inaspettatamente, da ciò che era cominciato come un esperimento scientifico, ne è seguita una serie di composizioni originali, al pianoforte, sviluppate con libera ispirazione classica, e un CD con 12 brani intitolato Arteries “Music for Peace” regolarmente iscritti alla società degli Autori presso a SIAE.

Le sue composizioni sono state presentate in concerto:

·      11 Dicembre 2009 presso l’Auditorium “Ennio Morricone” dell’Università di Tor Vergata in occasione di Music for Peace, primo evento d’Ateneo per l’educazione alla pace nel mondo universitario internazionale, inaugurato dal Magnifico Rettore Prof. Renato Lauro.

·      6 Dicembre 2011 a Palazzo Valentini presso l’Aula Consiliare della Presidenza del Consiglio Provinciale di Roma, in occasione di “Women for Peace”, evento organizzato con la presidenza della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia per celebrare le donne Africane vincitrici del Nobel per la pace 2011.

1987 : Vincitrice di una borsa di Studio del CNR per svolgere ricerche sul controllo motorio e il reclutamento muscolare monitorato con tecniche di registrazione di single fibre,  per un periodo di tre mesi, presso il dipartimento di Neurofisiologia Clinica, Istituto Granit, Upsala (Svezia).

2005-2007: Periodo sabbatico trascorso negli Stati Uniti, come visiting scientist, presso i dipartimenti di neurofisiologia dell'Università di George Town (Washington DC) diretti dalla candidata Nobel Prof. Candace Pert, NIH (Washington DC) e Irvine (University Campus of California). Nel corso di questo periodo concessole dalla Facoltà di Medicina, per approfondire nuovi aspetti riguardanti la plasticità cerebrale, si dedica all’osservazione delle basi neurofisiologiche del processo creativo e in particolare della composizione musicale. Nel tenere nota dei risultati di questa ricerca, inizia a sperimentare un nuovo approccio d’indagine, cercando di trasferire i propri impulsi concettuali ed emotivi direttamente sulla tastiera del pianoforte, secondo una modalità spontanea, ma di senso, con l’idea di tracciare i confini di uno spazio sonoro interno dell’ armonia, utilizzando sé stessa come soggetto sperimentale. Inaspettatamente, da ciò che era cominciato come un esperimento scientifico, ne è seguita una serie di composizioni originali, al pianoforte, sviluppate con libera ispirazione classica, e un CD con 12 brani intitolato Arteries “Music for Peace” regolarmente iscritti alla società degli Autori presso a SIAE.

Le sue composizioni sono state presentate in concerto:

·      11 Dicembre 2009 presso l’Auditorium “Ennio Morricone” dell’Università di Tor Vergata in occasione di Music for Peace, primo evento d’Ateneo per l’educazione alla pace nel mondo universitario internazionale, inaugurato dal Magnifico Rettore Prof. Renato Lauro.

·      6 Dicembre 2011 a Palazzo Valentini presso l’Aula Consiliare della Presidenza del Consiglio Provinciale di Roma, in occasione di “Women for Peace”, evento organizzato con la presidenza della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia per celebrare le donne Africane vincitrici del Nobel per la pace 2011.

1985-1986: Vincitrice di una borsa di studio del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione per un periodo di 1 anno di perfezionamento in tecniche avanzate di neurografia ed elettromiografia presso il Dipartimento di Neurofisiologia Clinica del Rigs Royal Hospital (Università di Copenaghen).

1987 : Vincitrice di una borsa di Studio del CNR per svolgere ricerche sul controllo motorio e il reclutamento muscolare monitorato con tecniche di registrazione di single fibre,  per un periodo di tre mesi, presso il dipartimento di Neurofisiologia Clinica, Istituto Granit, Upsala (Svezia).

2005-2007: Periodo sabbatico trascorso negli Stati Uniti, come visiting scientist, presso i dipartimenti di neurofisiologia dell'Università di George Town (Washington DC) diretti dalla candidata Nobel Prof. Candace Pert, NIH (Washington DC) e Irvine (University Campus of California). Nel corso di questo periodo concessole dalla Facoltà di Medicina, per approfondire nuovi aspetti riguardanti la plasticità cerebrale, si dedica all’osservazione delle basi neurofisiologiche del processo creativo e in particolare della composizione musicale. Nel tenere nota dei risultati di questa ricerca, inizia a sperimentare un nuovo approccio d’indagine, cercando di trasferire i propri impulsi concettuali ed emotivi direttamente sulla tastiera del pianoforte, secondo una modalità spontanea, ma di senso, con l’idea di tracciare i confini di uno spazio sonoro interno dell’ armonia, utilizzando sé stessa come soggetto sperimentale. Inaspettatamente, da ciò che era cominciato come un esperimento scientifico, ne è seguita una serie di composizioni originali, al pianoforte, sviluppate con libera ispirazione classica, e un CD con 12 brani intitolato Arteries “Music for Peace” regolarmente iscritti alla società degli Autori presso a SIAE.

·      11 Dicembre 2009 presso l’Auditorium “Ennio Morricone” dell’Università di Tor Vergata in occasione di Music for Peace, primo evento d’Ateneo per l’educazione alla pace nel mondo universitario internazionale, inaugurato dal Magnifico Rettore Prof. Renato Lauro.

·      6 Dicembre 2011 a Palazzo Valentini presso l’Aula Consiliare della Presidenza del Consiglio Provinciale di Roma, in occasione di “Women for Peace”, evento organizzato con la presidenza della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia per celebrare le donne Africane vincitrici del Nobel per la pace 2011.

2005-2007: Periodo sabbatico trascorso negli Stati Uniti, come visiting scientist, presso i dipartimenti di neurofisiologia dell'Università di George Town (Washington DC) diretti dalla candidata Nobel Prof. Candace Pert, NIH (Washington DC) e Irvine (University Campus of California). Nel corso di questo periodo concessole dalla Facoltà di Medicina, per approfondire nuovi aspetti riguardanti la plasticità cerebrale, si dedica all’osservazione delle basi neurofisiologiche del processo creativo e in particolare della composizione musicale. Nel tenere nota dei risultati di questa ricerca, inizia a sperimentare un nuovo approccio d’indagine, cercando di trasferire i propri impulsi concettuali ed emotivi direttamente sulla tastiera del pianoforte, secondo una modalità spontanea, ma di senso, con l’idea di tracciare i confini di uno spazio sonoro interno dell’ armonia, utilizzando sé stessa come soggetto sperimentale. Inaspettatamente, da ciò che era cominciato come un esperimento scientifico, ne è seguita una serie di composizioni originali, al pianoforte, sviluppate con libera ispirazione classica, e un CD con 12 brani intitolato Arteries “Music for Peace” regolarmente iscritti alla società degli Autori presso a SIAE.

·      11 Dicembre 2009 presso l’Auditorium “Ennio Morricone” dell’Università di Tor Vergata in occasione di Music for Peace, primo evento d’Ateneo per l’educazione alla pace nel mondo universitario internazionale, inaugurato dal Magnifico Rettore Prof. Renato Lauro.

·      6 Dicembre 2011 a Palazzo Valentini presso l’Aula Consiliare della Presidenza del Consiglio Provinciale di Roma, in occasione di “Women for Peace”, evento organizzato con la presidenza della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia per celebrare le donne Africane vincitrici del Nobel per la pace 2011.
